Because of the fame, expect lines at the Ulladulla institution on the weekend. It might be busy, but its pie specials are always worth a stop in. The famed butter chicken is on the menu all year round.

Orange’s Racine Bakery has a cult following in the region and beyond. Join the queue – don't worry, it moves quickly! – for organic sourdough, pies, sausage rolls, pastries and cakes. There's also a well-loved and -reviewed Reuben, and take-home meals.

This Goulburn institution has a lot going for it. For more than 20 years the family-run Trappers Bakery has been turning out a very long list of traditional and specialty breads, a ten-plus pie menu, Danishes, eclairs and an array of sweets for locals and tourists alike.

Slow Dough started as a garage bakery, operating out of the owners’ home. Today it’s a local institution, baking sourdough out of an old minister’s cottage behind Kiama’s Uniting Church. Find a sunny spot on the homely front lawn and try a focaccia, sandwich or pastry.

An instant, well-loved hit located just outside of Wollongong in Bulli, Millers’ Local Bakehouse is committed to using local ingredients with no preservatives or additives. A Port Stephens institution since 2001, Heatherbrae’s Pies also sells its pastries on the Central Coast and the Southern Highlands. But it’s not just classic Australian meat pies, the bakery-cafe has also won plaudits for apple pies and its gluten-free range.
