NSW is blessed with a large number of local farmers’ markets, where the stallholders sell produce from their own farms. Buying direct from local growers means that you’re purchasing your food from the experts, and have the opportunity to ask questions about how different foods are grown and how best to prepare them.
Farmers markets across the state are a great source for finding the best local and seasonal produce in the one convenient location. Explore a wide range of stalls to discover fresh fruit and vegetables, local meat and seafood, regional wine varieties and handmade treats. Farmers’ markets can also be a great place to pick up homemade bread, cakes and pastries, jams and preserves, oils, plants, and local arts and crafts.
Check out the Hunter Street Organic Markets in Newcastle, held in the heart of town, between Wednesday and Sunday each week. Here you’ll find organically-certified fruit and vegetables, flowers, local arts and crafts, cakes and donuts. Further north in Wauchope, near Port Macquarie you’ll find the Hastings Farmers’ Market offering fresh, hand-picked produce. In Lismore there’s the weekly Lismore Produce Market held each Thursday, with 100% local, seasonal produce. Lismore is also home to the Blue Knob Farmers’ Market, held every Saturday at the Blue Knob Gallery Hall.
South of Sydney in Wollongong is the weekly Foragers Market, held each Sunday. The Foragers Market sells seasonal fruit and vegetables, organic where possible, and only grown in NSW or the ACT. The market is indoors, so it runs whatever the weather. And just south of Yass is the Murrumbateman Village Market, a thriving local market in the heart of the Canberra district wine region where you can pick up fresh fruit and vegies, bread, jams, honey, sauces, wines, olives and olive oil. Don’t forget to check out the Mudgee Fine Foods Farmers Markets, held on the third Saturday of the month and packed with artisanal and handmade local products.
Another great way to buy local produce is to follow the farm gate trail. The Hawkesbury Harvest Farm Gate Trail is one such self-guided tour, where you can discover the farms, and meet the producers and makers all over the fertile Hawkesbury region. Experience the country lifestyle right on Sydney’s doorstep, where you can pick your own fruit and taste local cheeses, ciders and wines from the region.
