Food and wine in Griffith
Griffith is at the heart of the vast Murrumbidgee Irrigation Area and produces about 60% of the grapes grown in the State. Today, there are more than a dozen wineries in the district with world-famous names. Visit De Bortoli or Hanwood and stock up on local produce, such as jams, preserves or pasta sauces.
The Griffith area has fertile land that's particularly well-suited to vineyards, which has made it a popular food and wine destination. Take a tour of any of the nearby wineries or visit in June for the annual unWINEd festival. Griffith also comes alive during La Festa, an annual event celebrating food, wine and cultural diversity that takes place over Easter. A number of other festivals take place throughout the year, including the Festival of the Sausage and the Citrus Sculpture Display, so check the events calendar when planning your trip.
Griffith has a rich Italian heritage; learn about this history at the Griffith Italian Museum. To find out more about early history, don't miss Pioneer Park Museum, which spans 40 buildings on 11 hectares of land and even offers a place to stay in addition to Griffith's already generous choice of accommodation.
The town is an excellent base from which to explore local natural attractions. Lake Wyangan and Cocoparra National Park are just a short drive away. Hermits Cave, the former abode of a heartbroken Italian, is another fascinating spot to visit.
