Summer

Clyde River Berry Farm

Pick blueberries (December to January) 

Nestled on the banks of the Clyde River, Clyde River Berry Farm is a short drive from Batemans Bay. The farm is open every day of the pick-your-own season and while blueberries are the staple, blackberries and strawberries are sometimes available. Don’t leave without trying the homemade berry ice-cream and the range of jams made with farm produce.

Norland Fig Orchard 

Pick figs (December to April) 

Sweet and jammy, a perfectly tree-ripened fig is a summer sensation. Norland Fig Orchard is a stone’s throw from Orange, grows several varieties, and offers fig lovers a chance to choose their own across two harvests between December and April. Here, you pay for what you pick – check the orchard’s social media for opening hours and to get the latest update on what's in season.

Wombat Heights Orchard  

Pick peaches (January), figs (January to March), sugar plums (February) and persimmons (April to May), strawberries (October to April) and cherries (November to December) 

While cherries are the main crop at Wombat Heights Orchard in Wombat near Young, the spring and autumn months bring strawberries, figs, peaches, persimmons and sugar plums to pick too. Groups are welcome and it’s recommended you bring lunch and stay for a picnic on the lush two-acre garden grounds.

Cedar Creek Orchard   

Pick apples (January to May), stone fruit (November to January) and persimmons (April to May)

The Slim family has been tending Cedar Creek Orchard in Thirlmere since the 1940s. Wander the 100-acre property on a guided farm tour, where you’ll sample juice and observe the packing, grading and juicing operation. You can also purchase the Slim family’s delicious fruit, juice, honey and cider vinegar at the shed and, depending on the time of the year, pick your own produce.

Darkes Glenbernie Orchard   

Pick apples (January to April), and peaches and nectarines (from November) 

This six-generation, family-run Illawarra apple and stone fruit orchard is a destination for more than simply munching on a hand-picked apple. When not being pocketed by visitors, apples from Darkes Glenbernie Orchard end up in award-winning bottles of Darkes Cider. Don’t miss the farm tour with a ride on the Orchard Explorer tractor train.

TNT Produce  

Pick apples (January to June); stone fruit (January to April); persimmons (March to June); oranges, mandarins and lemons (June to July); cherries (November to December); and strawberries (November to May)

Crisp, sweet apples from Bilpin are some of Australia’s best and their flavour seems even more delectable when the apples are plucked and sampled straight from the branch. TNT Produce near Bilpin offers plenty of delicious activities. Pick an array of fruit – depending on the season – and stop by the store for local honey, juice, cider, jams, oils, olives and more. There’s also an array of veggies and sunflowers available at various times.

Shields Orchard 

Pick apples (February to May)

Head to Shields Orchard during the apple harvest to pick apples. With several varieties ripening at various times, you can typically start picking Royal Galas from February with Sundowners ripening in May. You’ll need to book in advance, and you simply pay for what you pick.

Mouat’s Farm 

Pick apples (February to June) and cherries (December to January)  

This Batlow farm in the foothills of the Snowy Mountains is abundant with fruit trees and Mouat's Farm is one of the best places to fill the boot with fresh apples and cherries. Come summer, you can pick a bucket of cherries and twist the first Gala apples from their branches. From there, other varieties roll out, including Kanzi, Fuji, Granny Smith and Pink Lady, until the picking season ends in early June.

Orchard in the Snowy Valleys

Ricardoes Tomatoes and Strawberries Farm

Pick strawberries and tomatoes (year-round)

The scent of strawberries is synonymous with summer, but at Ricardoes Tomatoes and Strawberries Farm in Port Macquarie, you can pick your own berries and tomatoes year-round thanks to the hydroponic growing system. Entry is free and you pay for what you pick. Arm the kids with buckets and send them off to collect to their heart's content. Open seven days a week, with guided tours on weekdays. 

Canoelands Orchard 

Pick a range of fruit and vegetables, year-round 

At Canoelands Orchard the world is your oyster. While the main picking season is October to December for stone fruit and berries, the orchard is also home to apples, pomegranates, tomatoes, eggplant, citrus, persimmons, figs, tamarillos, feijoas and more, meaning there’s something to pick most times of the year. There’s also an onsite shop offering farm-produced honey, jams and sauces.

Autumn

Foraging with Diego Bonetto 

Pick pine mushrooms (March to June) 

Join professional forager and author Diego Bonetto for his Foraging with Diego Bonetto experience. Part treasure hunt, part ecological education, be guided through forests in Penrose or Lithgow as you search for, and harvest, edible pine mushrooms. The workshop will leave you with a haul of fresh, delicious and safe fungi to take home or to have cooked up in oil and garlic by Bonetto.

Experience Nature 

Pick pine mushrooms (March to May) 

Experience Nature also offers pine mushroom foraging experiences in the forests of the Southern Highlands. Learn how to identify, find and cook this delicacy while enjoying some local cool-climate wines.

Pick chestnuts and walnuts across NSW 

Chestnuts and walnuts (March to April) 

Join the chestnut harvest that graces NSW every autumn between March and April. Stop by Kookootonga Chestnut & Walnut Farm and Nutwood Farm in Mount Irvine in the Blue Mountains to pick your own, while at Sassafras Nuts entry is $5 per person (kids under 12 are free) and nuts are $12/kg to pick.

Ozia Tours 

Pick apple, persimmon and cherries (May and December)  

If you’d prefer for someone else to transport you on a fruit-picking expedition, join a group with Ozia Tours. Leaving from Sydney or Parramatta, this full-day tour takes you to the famous apple-growing town of Bilpin, while the cherry-picking tour leads guests to Orange.

Winter

Hunt for truffles across NSW  

Find truffles (June to August) 

The arrival of the cooler months brings one of the dining industry’s most prestigious ingredients: the truffle. You can forage for your own at several farms across the state from June to August. Go on the hunt with Walter the dog at OakShade Truffles in Mudgee. Unearth premium black truffles at RedGround in Oberon across summer and winter, where you can also stay the night. Join a truffle hunt at Robertson Truffles in the Southern Highlands. Hunt with dogs and a small group at Gulaga Gold on the South Coast. Search beneath the English and French oak trees at Hidden Valley Farms in Goulburn. Sign up for the annual 'Black Tie and Gumboot Truffle Hunt and Dinner' experience at Orange's Borrodell Estate, where the hunt is followed by a decadent five-course degustation, or join the family-run farm hunt at Blue Frog Truffle Farm in Queanbeyan

Meliora Farm 

Pick oranges and lemons (June to December), mandarins (June and July), limes (June, July, November and December) and avocados (July to December) 

Tucked away in Peats Ridge on the Central CoastMeliora Farm has been growing incredible produce since 1925. Here guests are encouraged to bring a picnic blanket and enjoy the gorgeous scenery following their fruit-picking foray. Bookings are preferred but not required, and be sure to check the website and social channels for updates.

Anderson Farm 

Pick citrus (June to October) 

Depending on the time of year, head to Anderson Farm to pick mandarins, oranges or lemons. Based along the banks of the beautiful Hawkesbury River, the bush lemons make great lemon butter, and the oranges make a great tangy marmalade. Entry is $5 for those aged 10 years and over with large buckets of fruit costing $10.

Spring 

Berrylicious Strawberries 

Pick strawberries (September to June)  

If you’re taking a southward sojourn from Sydney and fancy the taste of a juicy strawberry, stop into Berrylicious Strawberries near Thirlmere and eat as many as you want for $22 per person (kids are $11, under twos eat for free) or take them home for $25/kg. Here, the greenhouse-grown berries are suspended from the ceiling.

The Giving Farm

Pick blueberries (October to December) and flowers (various timings) 

At The Giving Farm near Wyong on the Central Coast, find organic blueberries ripe for the picking in spring. Here, you must book in advance, but there is no entry fee for picking – simply grab a compostable punnet, find your favourite berries, and pay for what you pick. If you're lucky, flowers may also be available to pick too – sign up to the mailing list or keep an eye on socials for updates.

Pick cherries in Young 

A fleeting but delicious few weeks, with the season comes many pick-your-own experiences at farms mostly in Young – the cherry capital of Australia – and others further afield. Try your luck at Lynton OrchardsTop of the Hill OrchardMain Range Orchard and Allambie Orchard (in nearby Wombat). 

10's Estate 

Pick cherries (November to December) and figs (January to March) 

While the kids fill their buckets with fruit from 10’s Estate in Mudgee, adults can sample fruit in another form by way of the farm’s wine at the cellar door. Here, you can pluck figs January to March each year, and cherries in November and December. Don’t leave without a cherry popsicle.

Ballinaclash Fruit and Wine 

Pick cherries and apricots (from November to December) 

The team at Ballinaclash Fruit and Wine cultivates more than 14 varieties of cherries. When the season arrives, book in to pick your own. A $5 entry fee gains you access to the orchard, farm animals and a picnic area. There’s also a range of other produce available at the farm gate shop including stone fruit, figs, citrus and jams; cherry pie making classes; and the annual Spring Blossom Festival.  

Bidgee Strawberries and Cream 

Pick strawberries (November to May) 

At Bidgee Strawberries and Cream near the Riverina, the bursting red fruits are grown chemical free. Here, it’s $5 for entry and $25/kg for strawberries picked. The farm also offers meet-the-farmer tours and has a delicious farmgate shop and cafe stocked with strawberry jam, homemade cakes and slices, and strawberry ice-cream using Riverina milk.

Pine Crest Orchard 

Pick cherries (November), stone fruit (from December), apples and pears (from late January) and persimmons (April)  

Growing apples and pears for more than 40 years, Pine Crest Orchard in the Blue Mountains also offers pick-your-own fruit experiences across the year. During your visit, take part in the orchard’s interactive self tour where you can learn how to pick an apple, find information on fruit classification and learn how to cook them by way of QR codes with more information. 

Hillside Harvest  

Pick cherries (November to December), stone fruit (December to April), berries (January to March), apples (February to June), pears (February to March) and figs (April) 

Summer at the Hillside Harvest family orchard near Orange is filled with the sweet scent of cherries, berries and peaches. Visit to harvest your fill of seasonal goods or leave the kids to do the work while you enjoy a coffee in the Farm Store and Cafe.
