Food, produce and markets

Foodies travelling to the beautiful Eurobodalla region on the NSW South Coast have plenty to get excited about, from visiting farmers markets and cheese factories to enjoying freshly shucked oysters. Try local seafood, bush honey, elegant wines and other gourmet treats, and dine at the region’s top restaurants.

Batemans Bay is the heart of Australia’s Oyster Coast, where succulent Clyde River oysters are harvested in clean estuary waters. Other oyster-growing areas in Eurobodalla include the Tuross River Estuary at Tuross Head and the Wagonga Inlet in Narooma. The Narooma Oyster Festival in May is a must do.

To buy freshly-shucked oysters, visit Oyster Shed on Wray Street and the Pearly Oyster Bar and Farm in Batemans Bay. Nothing sets the scene for a local seafood feast quite like a waterfront view. Head to The River Moruya, JJ’s at the Marina in Batemans Bay, Tuross Boatshed & Cafe, and Quarterdeck in Narooma.

One of the best growers markets in Australia is the SAGE Farmers Market, held every Tuesday afternoon in Moruya. Pick up locally made cheeses, herbs, vegetables, sauces and more. On a Saturday, visit the Moruya Country Markets and the Tilba Growers Market to browse more fresh produce stalls.

Eurobodalla is one of Australia’s oldest dairying regions. In the charming village of Bodalla, see the dairy production process in action at the Bodalla Dairy Cheese Factory and enjoy old-fashioned milkshakes at the Bodalla Dairy Shed. You can also buy cheese from the ABC Cheese Factory in Central Tilba.

The region’s rich soils support a range of farms and vineyards. For wine tasting, visit the cellar door of Tilba Valley Winery & Ale House, found on the shores of Corunna Lake, near the foothills of Mount Gulaga. The winery, a short drive from Narooma, has a lunch menu and live music.

Head along to the Eurobodalla Agricultural Show at the Moruya Showgrounds in January to experience a traditional country show, complete with wood chopping, horse jumping, farm animals and local stock competitions, including cows, sheep and goats. There’s also carnival rides and family-friendly entertainment.
