Food and wine - Griffith
Must do
Food and wine in Griffith
Griffith is at the heart of the vast Murrumbidgee Irrigation Area and produces about 60% of the grapes grown in the State. Visit big-name wineries such as De Bortoli and Hanwood, stock up on local produce such as jams, preserves or pasta sauces.
Food and wine around Griffith
The city of Griffith and its surrounding area has been transformed by the Murrumbidgee Irrigation Area (MIA), a vast scheme that has transformed the once-dry Riverina plains into the "food bowl" of NSW. Italian migrants arrived in Griffith from the early 1900s; today, you can enjoy their legacy in cafes and restaurants and at cellar doors in local vineyards. Visit the Griffith Italian Museum to learn more about this heritage.
There are over a dozen wineries to visit here, including renowned labels such as De Bortoli Wines, Westend Estate, Casella Wines and McWilliams Hanwood Estate.Don't miss the delicious sweet wine made by the De Bortoli family from botrytis semillon.
There are many ways to enjoy Griffith's fine local produce. Riverina food hampers are readily available from Riverina Grove; take a tour of Catania Fruit Salad Farm at nearby Hanwood. Visit Leeton's SunRice Country Visitors Centre to watch rice-milling demonstrations and taste rice products. Leeton is also home of the Berry Juice Factory, one of the largest citrus processing plants in Australia.
If you’re a food lover, don’t miss La Festa in April and unWINEd in the Riverina each June, a showcase for the area’s best food and wine offerings.
