Barunguba Montague Island, a short trip from Narooma on the Eurobodalla South Coast, is one of the greatest snorkelling adventures in the region: a chance to swim with the seals. Depending on the season, between 400 and 2000 New Zealand and Australian fur seals live on the iconic granite rocks of this special wildlife sanctuary, looked after by the NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service. The island also draws eco-tourists, whale watchers, lighthouse history buffs and divers looking for the endangered grey nurse shark.

Less well known is the opportunity to snorkel with the playful, curious island seals. Much of the water around the island is deep, so experience and confidence are a must, as is good weather, but the encounter with nature and the surreal view of the underwater kelp forest make this a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

Charter boats run from Narooma, and island access is through National Parks and Wildlife Service contracted tour operators. Book snorkelling on its own, or combine it with a tour of Barunguba Montague Island as a half day trip or an overnight stay in the restored lighthouse keeper's cottages. Please note the reserve is closed during August.
