History
Although the mouth of the Shoalhaven River was an important coastal landmark that was known to colonial explorers and surveyors. George Bass sailed off Seven Mile Beach crossing the shoals of the river. Diary notes reveal he was impressed by the fertile river flats and named it Shoalhaven. The town itself was little more than a collection of fishing shacks until the 1930s. Since that time it has become a favourite for those in search of a traditional Aussie seaside retreat.
