The Pilliga Forest is situated to the east of Baradine and to the north of Coonabarabran. Pronounced Pily-gah, the Pilliga Forest is the largest native inland forest west of the Great Dividing Range, with over 500, 000 hectares to explore.
The Pilliga was once managed by State Forests and the Cypress Pine that grows in the forest was milled. Since 2005 however, there have been several new national parks formed and today, over half of the Forest is managed by NSW National Parks and Wildlife.
Please note that all roads in the Pilliga Forest are unsealed and driving requires extra care and a map. Please call into the National Parks and Wildlife Office in Baradine or the Coonabarabran Visitor Information Centre for a map and more details.
The Pilliga Forest offers many scenic forest drives and birds routes to observe the wildlife including more than 230 species of birds. Picnic facilities are available at the Salt Caves and Yarrigan picnic areas and the Sandstone Caves and Salt Caves have short marked walks.
The Salt Caves picnic area is located in Timmallallie National Park (in the central part of the Pilliga Forest) and contains a picnic area with free gas barbecue’s and toilets. An easy 1 kilometre stroll takes you to the Salt Caves Dam which when full of water attracts many species of birds and wildlife. Please note all plants, animals and rock features are protected.
The Pilliga Forest is well known for its bird watching. The Baradine community have developed bird routes through the Pilliga Forest. Call into the Rural Transaction Centre in Baradine or the Coonabarabran Visitors Centre to pick up a Birds of Baradine and the Pilliga brochure.
The Aloes Picnic Area is a lovely picnic area adjacent to an intermittent creek. It is a popular spot for viewing koalas and has a number of historic relics, including some early pioneer graves.
