In the heart of the spectacular Blue Mountains World Heritage Area, Katoomba is the region’s main town, and the ideal location to base yourself while exploring the Blue Mountains. Here you can bushwalk some incredible trails, enjoy breathtaking views, and check out Scenic World and Echo Point Lookout, two of Katoomba’s biggest attractions.
Echo Point Lookout is the main attraction in Katoomba, attracting some 4 million visitors each year. From here you can look out across the Jamison Valley at the famous Three Sisters rock formation.
The views are further enhanced by the distinctive blue haze that gives the mountains their name, created by the elastic scattering of light known at Rayleigh scattering. High frequency (blue) light becomes dominant as you gaze out at the distant mountains, due to the air in the region being so laden with dust particles and water droplets. These droplets are illuminated by sunlight and sit between your eyes and the mountains, making them appear blue.
Also not to be missed is a tour of the Jenolan Caves, some of the finest limestone caves in the country. Make sure you sign up for a Blue Mountains tour to get an insider’s perspective on this stunning part of the world.Katoomba on VisitNSW.com
