Fishing, snorkelling and diving Lord Howe Island

Surrounded by a marine park, Lord Howe Island is a paradise for anyone who enjoys water sports, especially fishing enthusiasts, snorkellers and divers.

The island offers excellent game fishing for the amateur and expert alike, ranking as a internationally-renowned classic sports and game fishing destination.

Fish are in abundance in these pristine waters. They include whiting, trevally, bonefish, Australian salmon, spangled emperor, bluefish and the double-headed wrass, which is unique to Lord Howe. Yellow fin and wahoo can be caught at Ball's Pyramid (the world’s tallest sea rock stack) while black, blue and striped marlin can be hooked in late summer and early autumn.

Head out with local guides for the day (or overnight) for deep-sea, reef or fly fishing.  You can also hire a dinghy and fishing rods, and putter around the island to find your own fishing hotspot.

Warm tropical waters and cooler currents have created a diverse range of marine life which makes a fascinating underwater world for divers and snorkellers.

The marine park surrounding Lord Howe Island contains the world's southernmost barrier coral reef, 300 species of algae, 500 species of fish and 120 species of mollusc. Green and hawksbill turtles are common in summer, but may be observed throughout the year. There are more than 80 dive sites, ranging from off-the-beach dives over beautiful coral reef to stunning Balls Pyramid. You can even dive in the lagoon in any weather to see amazing fish. PADI learn to dive courses are offered by operators on the island. Snorkelling is equally accessible and amazing. You can snorkel straight off the sand at Ned’s Beach, see the wondrous marine life of the lagoon or go on special snorkel boat trips.
