Tasting notes: Four Winds Vineyard

Just east of Murrumbateman and a short drive north of Canberra, Four Winds is also an easy detour from the Hume Freeway. The visitor experience is relaxed: pizzas and deli items are the order of the day and everyone is welcome.

What’s a winter highlight at Four Winds? A lot of people come for our potato and gorgonzola pizza. Either they’ve had it before and they come back, or someone has told them it’s worth the trip. It has an olive oil base plus white onion and rosemary, as well as the potato and blue cheese. It’s definitely one that gets people talking! Another popular pizza is the spicy chorizo, with a tomato base and two cheeses.

Tell us about the deli concept? We’re all about keeping it casual and flexible so we encourage people to take a wooden board from the top of the deli fridge and build their own platter from a selection of cheeses, meats and dips. The selection changes from time to time but we might have local smoked ham from Poachers Pantry and brie from Nowra Cheese.

What’s it like to visit? The building is mostly glass so there are views of the vines from just about everywhere. We also have an outdoor area called the Hayshed and people sometimes rug up and sit outside, even in winter. We definitely welcome everyone – we have family groups and business meetings and small birthday parties. People love how casual it is.

How are Four Winds wines wrapped into the experience? We offer two different tasting flights and present four wines in each on a little piece of timber. Usually one flight will focus on red wines, and the other will be mixed. It works out to be about 1.5 standard drinks. People love it because it’s not rushed and they get to try the wine with food. The signature wine is our sparkling riesling. It’s great with our pizza!

What about to take home? Apart from our wines, we have a Riesling Gin. We couldn’t do a 2020 vintage because the grapes were tainted by bushfire smoke so we made the best of a bad situation and used some of the grapes in a Riesling Gin. The flavours are very citrusy and floral – we recommend drinking it over ice.
