Piazzolla | Classical Concert

'Piazzolla' is part of a wider festival weekend titled, Grigoryan Brothers & Friends, bringing together an ensemble like no other. The musical relationships run deep and wide, spanning years, countries, repertoire, and instrumentation. What makes this weekend special isn't just the repertoire (spanning Bach to Piazzolla, jazz inspirations to ambient atmospheres) or the rare mix of instruments (think classical and electric guitars, piano, bass, tabla, cello and voice). It's the chemistry. These artists have toured together, written together, risked together, lived and loved together over many years, countries and genres. They are both blood and chosen family. Expect moments of high-wire virtuosity and, just as often, the kind of stillness that transcends time.

Saturday morning dives into the intoxicating world of Astor Piazzolla and the sensual pulse of tango nuevo. Vladimir Gorbach opens with fiery renditions of Verano Porteño and Invierno Porteño, before Sharon Grigoryan and Slava Grigoryan evoke the genre's shifting moods in Bordel 1900, Café 1930, and Nightclub 1960. Andrew Blanch and vocalist Maria Eugenia Nieva bring tender lyricism to Gardel's El Día que Me Quieras and Piazzolla's Chiquilín de Bachín. The program crescendos through Fuga y Misterio and the Tango Suite, culminating in lush ensemble works, Ave Maria, Oblivion, and Fear, echoing Piazzolla's emotional intensity and rhythmic drive.
