Pick up a fossicking map from visitor information centres in Glen Innes, Inverell, Warialda and Bingara. You can try panning for gold at Three Creeks Tourist Gold Mine, and prospecting for sapphires at Billabong Blue Sapphire Fossicking Park and 7 Oaks Sapphire Fossicking.

Glen Innes is home to the annual Minerama Fossicking, Gem and Jewellery Show, a three-day festival in March and the largest of its kind in NSW. Check out the events calendar for more fun festivals in the region, such as the Australian Celtic Festival and the Emmaville Sheep Races.

A scenic drive north of Glen Innes is the beautiful town of Tenterfield, known as the birthplace of Australia after Sir Henry Parkes’ famous 1889 speech here calling on the colonies to unite. You can visit the Sir Henry Parkes Memorial School of Arts where he gave the Tenterfield Oration.

There’s many natural wonders in this splendid part of the New England region, including national parks in the Gondwana Rainforests of Australia World Heritage Area. Explore ancient rainforests on walking tracks in the Washpool National Park and the Gibraltar Range National Park.

Go fishing in the Gwydir and Horton rivers around Bingara. A short drive northeast of Bingara is the heritage-listed Myall Creek Massacre Memorial, commemorating the 28 Aboriginal people killed by stockmen on 10 June 1838. A service is held every June long weekend.

You’ll find plenty of places to stay in the Glen Innes and Inverell area, from campgrounds and caravan parks to cottages, country pubs and motels. Getting to this northern NSW area is easy by car. Nearby regional cities with airports are Moree, Armidale, Tamworth and Grafton.
