Why go there
At 1,680 metres and located within a protected snow bowl, Smiggin Holes is regarded as one of the best beginners' resorts on the Australian ski fields. It is interconnected with other resorts such as Perisher Valley, Guthega and Blue Cow, and is considered a family-friendly retreat.
History
Early settler James Spencer took up grazing rights in the area in the 1840s. Smiggin Holes was named after the sink holes left by Spencer’s cattle.
It first began to attract winter sportspeople in 1939 when a cafe was built to service skiers heading to the Snowy Mountains and was from the 1950s was one of the many work camps established by the Snowy Mountains Scheme.
