Port Macquarie
Must do
With rainforest walks, marine reserves, beautiful beaches and national parks Port Macquarie is ideal for spotting wildlife, both on and off shore.
Port Macquarie beaches
Situated in a beautiful location where the Hastings River meets the Pacific Ocean, Port Macquarie is surrounded by 15 pristine beaches. Endless beachside pursuits will keep you entertained - coastal walks, surfing, sailboarding, swimming, fishing and even camel rides on the beach. Many beaches feature BBQs and playgrounds and there are plenty of learn-to-surf schools that are accredited.
Flynn’s Beach, 3km south of Port Macquarie, is nestled between a pair of rocky headlands and suits learn-to-surfers most of the year. Nearby Lighthouse Beach is a 9-km stretch of southeast-facing sand with the best waves at the more sheltered northern end. Town Beach has three main breaks along its 800m, beginning with the break-wall. The Middle is generally best left to experienced surfers and Flagstaff is the protected southern headland.
Crescent Head, 9 km south-east of Kempsey, is surrounded by the natural beauty of the Hat Head National Park, Goolawah Reserve and the Limeburners Creek Nature Reserve. Just choose your beach from an endless list that includes Front Beach, Back Beach, Goolawah Beach, Racecourse, Delicate Nobby and Big Hill. To protect this stunning coastline, Crescent Head National Surfing Reserve stretches along 3.5km of coastline from north of Port Macquarie.
