Nature around Pooncarie
Mungo National Park, 88 km from Pooncarie, is part of the Willandra Lakes World Heritage Area where the remains of Mungo Woman and Mungo Man were discovered. Mungo's lunar landscape and Walls of China hills are amongst the most striking natural formations in NSW.
About Pooncarie
This former Darling River port, 116 km north-east of Wentworth, is now a sleepy village. One hundred years ago, Pooncarie thrived as a port serving the stations further upstream, such as Wilcannia. Today, little remains from this time but there's an unhurried ambience and friendly locals.
Enjoy a picnic under the river gums or browse The Pooncarie Outback and Beyond Craft Gallery and Museum, located in the former Pooncarie Police Station. The Pooncarie Cup bush race meeting in October is a highlight of the social calendar.
