About Pooncarie

This former Darling River port, 116 km north-east of Wentworth, is now a sleepy village. One hundred years ago, Pooncarie thrived as a port serving the stations farther upstream, such as Wilcannia. Today, little remains from this time, but visitors to this Outback NSW town will enjoy unhurried ambience and friendly locals.

Visitors planning to travel to the area should schedule in the Pooncarie Field Day, which takes place every two years at the Pooncarie Racecourse on the Darling River. With more than 100 exhibits on show from sheep breeds to gleaming utes, it's a fantastic family day out. Enter the Boot Art Competition or if you're game, the Ladies' Trailer Backing Competition!

Accommodation, meals and a pickup service from the all-weather airstrip are available at the Pooncarie Telegraph Hotel Motel. Make sure you enjoy a cold drink there after a game of golf on the Pooncarie Golf course – said to test even the best of golfers.

If you're visiting Pooncarie, continue to explore by mapping a route through the towns of Wilcannia, Mildura, Wentworth and Dareton to make the most of this diverse and fascinating area.
