The Parkes area has plenty of reasons to visit, from the CSIRO Parkes Radio Telescope that broadcast the moon landing, to the annual Elvis Festival, the biggest of its kind in the southern hemisphere, with hundreds of Elvis impersonators trekking to the city on their annual pilgrimage to celebrate the life of ‘The King’. Parkes is a town with a rich mining and agricultural history. The area is also known for its great walks, a few of which afford you panoramic views of the area. There’s also a year-round calendar of great events to check out.

Also not to be missed is Forbes, an historic gold mining settlement located just over 30km from Parkes. Set on the Lachlan River, it’s known as one of the stomping grounds of bushrangers Ben Hall and Frank Gardiner; follow the Forbes heritage trail to find out more. Accommodation in the Parkes area is plentiful, so it’s a good place to base yourself while exploring country NSW.
