Located on the northern outskirts of Wollongong, the chic coastal village of Bulli in the Illawarra region of NSW entices with pretty beaches, colonial streetscapes and mining heritage. The dramatic Illawarra Escarpment and sparkling blue waters of the Pacific Ocean set the scene for gorgeous picnics, swimming, cycling and surfing adventures.
Dating back to the 1860s, Bulli has a long history of mining coal – nicknamed black diamonds by the locals. Hear the stories of mining tragedies and underground heroism at Bulli Black Diamond Museum Heritage Centre. Located in the heritage-listed Bulli Railway Station, it is an apt spot to learn about the horse-drawn tramways and steam locomotives that serviced Bulli Mine.
Wander through Bulli to see it’s heritage architecture showcased in well-preserved pubs, churches, timber cottages and public buildings. For a hearty feed or cold drink, drop into the grand three-storey Bulli Heritage Hotel, which has been serving thirsty locals since 1889.

The tranquil Bulli Beach is 900 metres long, and perfect for swimming and surfing. Neighbouring a large park, it's an ideal spot for family picnics. At the northern end of the beach take a dip in an Olympic-sized ocean pool dating back to the 1930s while toddlers splash in adjoining shallow pool. Stroll north to Sandon Point Beach, another gem with a pretty grassed area.

Head to the Southern Gateway Centre for incredible views of Illawarra and the South Coast from the Bulli Lookout. Nestled on top of the Illawarra Escarpment, here you'll also find the Wollongong Visitor Information Centre, restaurant Altitude 1148 and a gelato shop. For more breathtaking views, walk to the top of Sublime Point lookout, a little farther north.

Check out the events calendar for markets and festivals like the Illawarra Folk Festival which brings together musicians, artists, poets and dancers each January. If crafting furniture and turning wood is more your style, head to Woodfest where you'll see amazing wooden creations, learn from the experts during workshops, and carve your own ornament.
Taste local produce from fresh fruits and cheese to street food and gin at Bulli Village Market, held on the second Sunday each month.

Join a tour of Resin Brewing to learn about the brewing process, discover the heritage of their brewery site, and taste a paddle of four craft beers. With regular live music performances by headline acts and a kitchen dishing up delicious meals, this is a popular evening spot for locals and visitors alike.

Bulli is located just south of Sydney, with the drive taking about 75 minutes. You can also catch a train from Sydney, which takes about 80 minutes. There are lots of places to stay in Bulli, including holiday houses, beachfront cabins and campgrounds with amazing views. For cabins and campsites ocean views, stay at Bulli Beach Tourist Park.
Turn your visit to the Illawarra region into a memorable road trip by driving the stunning Grand Pacific Drive from Sydney (an EV-friendly drive). This scenic coastal route winds through lush rainforests, over the iconic Sea Cliff Bridge, and past charming towns like Wollongong and Shellharbour. Along the way, enjoy ocean views, coastal walks, and plenty of stops for local eats and outdoor adventures – making the journey just as exciting as the destination. The EV-friendly Sydney to Melbourne Coastal Drive road trip also passes through Kiama.
