Byron Bay International Film Festival

The annual Byron Bay International Film Festival will screen from February 28 to March 9, 2014.

Held over 10 days, this dynamic festival brings the best in independent Australian and world cinema to Byron Bay. It promises to be an entertaining, inspiring and thought-provoking program of film and events.

A total of 226 films from 36 countries will be screened throughout the 10 days, 43 of those world premieres and 102 Australian premieres. The most highly-anticipated among the Australian premieres is GASLAND PART II, a follow-up to Josh Fox’s explosive Oscar-nominated film, GASLAND. The American documentary attracted global attention after it highlighted the environmental impacts of fracking, a controversial method of extracting natural oil and gas that’s now used in 32 countries worldwide.

The festival ensures all tastes are covered with a wide ranging showcase of both family-friendly and mature audience only short films, in a mix of genres including action, culture, drama, environmental, local and social justice.

Discover more about the screen industry by getting involved in one of the various workshops on offer; learn how to create a successful crowdfunding campaign; meet a veteran stuntman and understand the physical and mental requirements necessary for the job; and challenge social constructions in a seminar that explores the shifting representations of masculinity in film and the media.

The end of the Byron Bay International Film Festival will be celebrated with a Gala Closing Party on March 8. Get the star treatment at this red carpet event and mingle with behind the films you admired most. The highlight of the evening will be the world premiere of Cathy Henkel’s Rise of the Eco Warriors. The film follows dedicated young group of volunteers who leave their homes for the jungles of Borneo in a plight to save the rainforests and its endangered orang-utans.

Book your Byron Bay accommodation and stay for a few days or the entire festival. Whether you’re a film buff or occasional viewer this extensive program is sure to entertain and the town’s scenic surf and sand is sure to please.
