Clifton is an old coastal coal-mining suburb in northern suburbs of Wollongong. It is situated on a narrow area between the Pacific Ocean and the Illawarra escarpment.

Along with nearby Coalcliff, this village began life as a coal-mining centre in the 1880s. Many coalminers' cottage-style houses are still in use.

Clifton is your best stop if you are looking to walk across the iconic Sea Cliff Bridge.

There is a railway station which runs on the South Coastline with parking available at the southern end of the bridge. Clifton is home to the Clifton School of Arts which was established in 1880 and has been used as a community-building since 1911.
