Diversity’s the name of the game on this fantastic day walk. Lace up your walking shoes, fill up your drink bottle, and set off through a host of ever-changing landscapes on Major Clews Hut walking track.
Begin walking on Major Clews Hut walking track, located on Alpine Way, about 16 kilometres south of Khancoban. You’ll travel past alpine ash, wattle blooming in abundant yellow flashes, and montane forests balancing atop craggy ridgelines. Feel the temperature drop as you trek down into the park’s gullies, and soak up the amazing views, both pristine and varied.
After hiking eight kilometres in a north-westerly direction, you’ll reach Major Clews Hut on the left – don’t forget to take a good look at this historic alpine hut. It was built in the late 1950s for the eponymous Major, a surveyor for the Snowy Mountain Scheme. Return along the same track (uphill).
If you're driving or riding, you can connect with Geehi Walls track for around 27 kilometres, which loops back to meet Alpine Way, 12 kilometres south of your start point.
Pure joy as you wake to the sunrise. Awe as you make it to the snowy peak. A sense of adventure as you motor across red plains. The relief of rejuvenation as you wade into an alpine stream. Connection as you taste native, fragrant leaves. A sense of belonging as you return to your favourite holiday house. Freedom as you dash into the waves.
