Bell Iroquois A2-1022 Helicopter
Overview
The Iroquois A2‑1022 helicopter stands proudly in Vanges Park on Pangee Street, outside the Nyngan Visitor Information Centre. Donated to the community to commemorate the 1990 flood evacuation, the aircraft symbolises the courage shown when helicopters airlifted residents to safety.
Originally delivered from the United States in 1962, A2‑1022 served in the Vietnam War, transporting Australian troops and equipment. It played a key role during the Battle of Long Tan in 1966, helping resupply soldiers under intense conditions. After restoration work in Queensland, a fully restored replacement aircraft was returned to Nyngan and mounted for public display. Today, it offers visitors a striking and meaningful connection to both local and military history.
