Lismore Area

Discover wonderful attractions in the beautifully diverse Lismore area, from rainforest walking tracks and lovely beaches to a fabulous arts trail and a large koala population. There are amazing lookouts and towering waterfalls, and in picturesque riverside towns are fun festivals, markets and galleries.

Lismore is at the heart of this Northern Rivers region, on the far NSW North Coast. You’ll be thrilled with the vibrant arts and music scene in the hinterland city. The ocean beaches and tasty seafood of Evans Head and the stunning UNESCO World Heritage-listed national parks are all within easy reach.

Getting to Lismore is easy. The drive south from Brisbane is about 2h 40min and north from Sydney is eight hours – best split into several days. Or fly into Lismore Airport and rent a car. Trains from Sydney and Brisbane also stop regularly in Lismore and surrounds, including Casino and Kyogle.

Kyogle, northwest of Lismore, is a gateway to several splendid national parks in the Gondwana Rainforests of Australia World Heritage Area. You can visit nation-building railway heritage, too. The historic Border Loop – the first standard gauge railway to link Sydney and Brisbane – opened in 1930.

Casino, southwest of Lismore, is known as the beef capital. The town’s heritage includes a large number of Art Deco buildings. West of here is the pretty Cambridge Plateau scenic drive, which winds north along a ridge and through rainforest in the magnificent Richmond Range National Park.

Nimbin is a colourful alternative lifestyle destination north of Lismore. The heritage streetscape on Cullen Street is dotted with timber buildings adorned with vivid murals. The small town is near Nightcap National Park, where the Protesters Falls is named after anti-logging rallies in 1979.

You’ll find plenty of accommodation options in the region. Check out the events calendar when planning your holiday for festivals, such as the Lismore Lantern Parade Festival, the Nimbin Poetry World Cup and the Evans Head Fishing Classic as well as agricultural shows, markets and horse races.

Lismore Regional Airport

Lismore Regional Airport is located 4 km from Lismore town’s centre. Use the car rental or taxi services available at the terminal to make the short trip north.
