West Wyalong

At the cross roads of the Newell and Mid Western highways, West Wyalong is charming town in the beautiful Riverina region with a rich goldmining heritage. Gold was discovered in 1893 and the main street was built around gold diggings and old tree stumps, earning the ‘crooked mile’ nickname.

A great way to experience the heritage buildings is on the West Wyalong Heritage Walk, a self-guided stroll that includes the crooked main street. Stop for refreshments at Thom, Dick and Harry’s, a cafe and florist on Main Street. You can pick up a brochure for the walk and the many other things to do and see from the West Wyalong Visitor Information Centre at the library.

Discover more of the goldmining heritage of the area in the Wyalong Museum and at the 25-metre True Blue Mining Poppet Head — the structure above a mine shaft — at Cooinda Park, a popular picnic spot. The museum is located in the old court house and open daily between 2pm and 5pm.

The Green Corridor Walking Track is a delightful walking and cycling trail between West Wyalong and Wyalong. You’ll find a range of antique shops and art galleries to browse in both West Wyalong and Wyalong, including the Exclusive Hot Glass Gallery.
