Federal Hotel Murray Downs

Affectionately known as 'The Fed', the Federal Hotel is a family‑owned and operated pub located just over the Swan Hill Bridge in Murray Downs. Offering relaxed country hospitality and all the comforts of a modern pub, it's a favourite meeting place for locals and visitors alike.

Steeped in history, the Federal Hotel was established in 1889 after John Gray — operator of the Swan Hill punt — secured the land and a NSW liquor licence. The original weatherboard building was completed in 1890, predating the first lift‑span bridge across the Murray River by six years. The hotel's bistro, Puddi's, honours former licensee George Puddicombe, who ran the hotel from 1915 to 1939 and was a well‑known Swan Hill identity.

During renovations in the early 2000s, a brick façade reading "Puddicombe's Federal Hotel" was uncovered, inspiring the bistro's name and preserving a proud piece of local heritage.

Today, The Fed continues to blend its rich past with a fresh, modern feel. From summer amphitheatre performances to cosy winter live‑music nights in the bar, it's the place to be— rain, hail or shine.
