Visitors to Culcairn are able to see the memorial site of John McLean, one of two local victims of the infamous bushranger, Dan Morgan.

'Mad Dan' Morgan was one of the most unpleasant bushrangers of his time. Morgan operated in the Henty, Culcairn, Morven, Gerogery and Tumbarumba areas over several years, and was remembered for the notorious murder of a local man, John McLean.

McLean fell victim to Mad Dan in 1864 when Morgan 'visited' Round Hill Station. Morgan confronted Mrs Watson, the wife of the manager, demanding food. A gunfight between Morgan ensued and McLean was fatally wounded.

The memorial of John McLean can be found on the Culcairn Holbrook Road, a minutes drive from Culcairn.

Visitors interested in the notorious legend of Mad Dan can also visit other landmarks including the memorial of Sergeant Smyth in Henty and Morgan's Lookout, the hideout he used to evade police.
