Standing tall since 1900, Rutherglen's historic water tower, now affectionately known as "The Wine Bottle" is a beloved local landmark with a fascinating story. Originally built to hold 72,000 gallons of water for the town, it became a backup supply after the construction of a new reservoir in 1945.

In 1969 the tower took on its iconic wine bottle shape when a mesh top section was added - funded by the Rutherglen Wine Festival (now Roam Rutherglen). From a distance, the silhouette resembles a giant wine bottle, celebrating the region's rich winemaking heritage.

Today, The Wine Bottle is more than just a piece of history - it's a perfect picnic or rest stop for walkers and cyclists exploring the area. From here, you can take in panoramic views of Mount Buffalo and the Chiltern Ironbark Forest, making it a peaceful and picturesque place to unwind.

Whether you're a history buff, a nature lover, or simply looking for a quiet spot to relax, The Wine Bottle is a must-see on your Rutherglen itinerary.
