Bowral is the largest and most well-known town of the Southern Highlands region. With its leafy streets, manicured gardens and picturesque architecture, Bowral is a popular country retreat –– especially for fans of good food and wine, bushwalking, weekend markets, and antiquing. Bowral is easy to reach from Sydney by car or train, and the nearby towns of Mittagong, Moss Vale and Berrima are also well worth a visit.

There’s a host of great Southern Highlands events that take place in Bowral each year. The Southern Highlands Writers’ Festivals is one of the biggest events in the region. Taking place each winter, it attracts some of Australia’s leading writers, creatives and thinkers. In spring, don’t miss the Tulip Time Festival, when the Southern Highlands is blanketed with vibrant, beautiful tulips. In October, sample the food and products of local restaurants and wineries at the Southern Highlands Food and Wine Festival.
