Snooze among the animals

When you wake up at Wallinga Farmstay, your first 'good morning' you say could be to Bruno the alpaca. He's just one of the friendly animals that live on this small family farm, along with sheep, cattle and chickens. There are three cosy stays to choose from – one studio close to the main house and two two-bedroom cottages set further into the property. After a multi-million-dollar revamp, a classic 1960s roadside motel has been reborn as The Clairfield Hotel. Go off-grid on a working farm

Spend the night beneath the stars

The eco-friendly dome at Hideaway Domes looks like it could have been dropped from outer space. But it will actually be you looking at the stars, from the comfy queen bed positioned in front of a huge bay window. The unique tent is set in secluded bushland about 15 minutes outside of Mudgee, so you won't have to worry about anyone looking in – except perhaps a few curious kangaroos at dawn.

Another retro gem reborn, The Cudgee at Mudgee is a 14-room boutique hotel that also welcomes the furry members of your family. Rooms are clean and bright, with cork flooring, high-end linens and custom artworks. They range in size from queen rooms to two-bedroom studios, many with kitchenette facilities. There's also a pretty swimming pool – though sadly, no dogs allowed in there.

Savour a five-star country estate 

Evanslea Luxury Boutique Accommodation offers four intimate one-bedroom cottages and the historical four-bedroom Evanslea House, set alongside the Cudgegong River. Though you'll be a short walk from Mudgee's centre, the tranquil setting allows for a quiet relaxing stay. Step back in time to the days of Mudgee's settlement  

The 160-year-old Cobb & Co Court Boutique Hotel still has many of its original features, including the cobbled courtyard where horses were once stabled and the original staircases leading to the 14 luxury rooms, with vintage fittings and fixtures. The Tannery is an 1850s two-bedroom bungalow, in the heart of Mudgee. Retaining much of its original charm, you can cosy up by the open fire or relax on the back verandah overlooking the garden. Take your time heading home 

Heading back to Sydney? Linger an extra night or two to explore the heritage village of Rylstone, a 45-minute drive east of Mudgee, and enjoy a stay at the eco-friendly Wollemi Retreat.
