Whether you’re on a family trip, getaway with friends or on a solo escape, Wollongong and the wider South Coast is packed with outstanding events and activities that make for an adventurous holiday getaway.
Grab a bunch of friends and sign up for the inaugural Bravo Team Challenge to experience adventure on a military-style obstacle course from 17 – 19 April. Test your physical strengths and problem solving skills as you and your team compete to accumulate as many points as possible over three days of challenges. Each group needs a minimum of six people (maximum 10) and the event caters for various levels of fitness with three categories for beginners, intermediate and open/elite competitors. You can also choose to partake in just one, two, or all three days of the challenge. Days one and two take place in the beautiful surrounds of the Wollongong Botanic Garden, while day three involves challenges on Wollongong City Beach. For more natural attractions, travel south to Kiama for a day trip and explore the beautiful Kiama Coastal Walk to take in the region’s stunning scenery alongside beaches, grass tracks and headlands. Nearby, connect with nature at the award-winning Minnamurra Rainforest Centre and walk through lush subtropical rainforest to see the Upper Minnamurra Falls.
Further south, the beachside town of Callala Bay within pristine Jervis Bay hosts the XTERRA Asia-Pacific Championship triathlon event during the same weekend on 18 April. The triathlon involves a 1.5 km ocean swim, 29 km mountain bike and 12 km trail run, with pro and all age group divisions for men and women, as well as team categories. There’s also fun for all the family with a shorter distance sprint off-road triathlon, trail half-marathon/relay, 5 km trail run/walk and a host of free kids events. Try something new while in town and glide along the still waters of Jervis Bay stand up paddle boarding, or head north to take a lesson with JPD Surf in Shellharbour. You can also glide your way through the region with a Segway Tour of the South Coast.
Enjoy a great family day out at Wings over Illawarra held at Albion Park over the weekend of 2 – 3 May. This exciting annual airshow features different aerial displays from aerobatic, historic, modern and military aircraft, along with defence force exhibits, freestyle motocross displays, classic cars and bikes, amusement rides and more. Can’t get enough of the skies? Take a ride of a lifetime with Top Gun Australia and experience an adrenaline-filled fighter jet adventure flight with speeds of up to 900 km/h at Albion Park Airport. Take in more breathtaking views from above tandem hang gliding from Bald Hill in Stanwell Park, or go ziplining at the award-winning Illawarra Fly Treetop for beautiful panoramic views of the ocean and rainforest canopy around Jamberoo.
