Platypus Pool and Rock Carvings

Located along the banks of the Richmond River at Irving Bridge in Casino, New South Wales, the Platypus Pools and Rock Carvings offer a unique outdoor wildlife and art experience in the Richmond Valley. The site is a renowned vantage point for spotting wild platypus swimming and foraging in their natural river habitat during the early morning and late afternoon.

In addition to native wildlife—including native fish, ducks, and waterfowl—the eastern side of the bridge features impressive platypus rock carvings embedded directly in the natural riverbed. Carved by artist Mick Thorman in 1994, these public stone artworks seamlessly blend local art with the surrounding river environment, making it a popular stop for nature lovers, families, and photographers.
