Beaches & water activities
Wategos Beach, Byron Bay
We don’t like to brag (well, maybe just a little), but with almost 2,000 kilometres of coastline and more than 700 beaches – 100 of them in Sydney alone – NSW is an ocean-lover’s dream destination. Surfers descend on brilliant breaks like Lennox Head or Byron Bay's The Pass, snorkellers on spots like Julian Rocks and Jervis Bay, families on the calm waters of Narrawallee Inlet and Shoal Bay, and loll-about-on-your-towel types on just about anywhere. Explore water activities aplenty, plus where to dine and sleep with an unbeatable water view.
Always swim between the red and yellow flags; surf lifesavers have identified this area as the safest spot to swim in the water. It's also a good idea to always swim with a friend.
Pay attention to the advice of the lifesavers and safety signs. Visit SharkSmart to understand any potential risks in the area you are swimming. You are always welcome to ask lifeguards for more safety advice. If you find yourself needing help in the water, stay calm and attract attention. Check conditions before you go.
