Sakura Avenue

In spring, Cowra's Sakura Avenue becomes one of the most breathtaking scenic drives in Central West NSW, with thousands of delicate cherry blossoms transforming the historic route into a spectacular corridor of pink and white.

Created by Cowra Shire Council as a 1988 Australian Bicentenary project, the avenue features 1,988 cherry trees planted as a lasting symbol of peace, friendship and reconciliation between the people of Australia and Japan. Each tree was sponsored by Japanese businesses and citizens or Australian schoolchildren, giving this beautiful avenue an especially meaningful story.

Begin at the renowned Cowra Japanese Garden and Cultural Centre before following Sakura Avenue—also known as the Avenue of Cherry Trees to the historic Cowra Prisoner of War Camp site and the Australian and Japanese War Cemeteries.

Combining vivid spring colour with Cowra's internationally significant wartime history, Sakura Avenue is an unforgettable seasonal experience and one of the best places to see cherry blossoms in regional New South Wales.
