Newcastle Music Festival is proud to welcome Pinchgut Opera to Newcastle for the first time, bringing the sublime Vespers by Claudio Monteverdi to Christ Church Cathedral. The artists of Cantillation, and Orchestra of the Antipodes will be led by Erin Helyard from the harpsichord. Written in 1610, this work has the Latin title Vespro della Beata Vergine, and is a setting of the vespers celebrating the Blessed Virgin Mary. The work has 13 movements, and the performance has a duration of approximately 90 minutes. This masterpiece of early music has become known to 20th and 21st century audiences after 400 years of relative obscurity, and was perhaps never performed in full during Monteverdi’s lifetime.
Pinchgut Opera’s regional tour of NSW is supported by Create NSW.
