Events in Newcastle

The harbour city of Newcastle is a bustling cosmopolitan centre with a wide range of year-round events including food festivals, arts and craft markets, surfing competitions and maritime celebrations.

A popular surfers’ hub, Newcastle hosts a number of surfing events throughout the year including one of Australia’s largest surfing festivals, Surfest. Held on Merewether Beach in February each year, the event celebrates surf culture and attracts a number of the world’s best professional men, women and junior surfers.

Visit one of Newcastle’s many local markets. The Hunter Street Organic Food Markets is a weekly community market that runs from Wednesday to Saturday. For a taste of the city’s bustling art scene, head to the Olive Tree Markets on the first Saturday of the month and browse diverse stalls selling handmade art, craft and fashion.

Newcastle hosts the National Maritime Festival in celebration of Australia Day on January 26 each year. The one-day event includes harbour swims, live entertainment, historical exhibitions and RAAF aerial displays.
