Beaches and river

Stretch out on Hawks Nest Beach, also known as Bennetts Beach, a spectacular sandy strip that reaches north to Myall Lakes National Park and south to Yacaaba Headland. Sheltered from the ocean, nearby Jimmys Beach is an ideal spot for kids to swim and play between Yacaaba Headland and the Myall River.

Take a guided tour of the Myall River with Ezy Kayaks Hawks Nest. The surrounding waterways are great for fishing and boating. Pull up a boat or canoe and unpack a picnic lunch at Pipers Creek picnic area. You can also kayak along the tranquil river to Engels Reach picnic area for a scenic lunch.

Walking trails

Stretch your legs by climbing the challenging Yacaaba Headland walking track, a hike that rewards with spectacular views over the headland of Port Stephens. Follow the Dark Point walking track through dunes to Dark Point Aboriginal Place, a significant gathering place for Worimi Aboriginal people for more than 4,000 years.

Near Hawks Nest, in Myall Lakes National Park, the Mungo Walking Track features Aboriginal sites and mountain biking. This track joins Mungo Brush campground on the trail along Bombah Broadwater to Hawks Nest. Don’t forget to check out dolphin cruises in nearby Nelson Bay, only a short ferry ride away.

Perfect for a beachside escape or family holiday, Hawks Nest is around three hours’ drive north of Sydney and 90min from Taree Airport. Coach services also run from Sydney via Newcastle. You can make this a memorable stop on a North Coast road trip.

Taree Airport

Fly into Taree Airport

Taree Airport is 7km from Taree’s town centre. Use the taxi services to make the short trip northeast. Alternatively, rent a car from the hire services available at the airport and explore the regions of Manning Valley and the Great Lakes at your own pace.

Fly Pelican operates direct flights between Sydney and Taree six days a week, and flies to Newcastle once a week. For other major Australian cities, connect via Sydney to travel into Taree.
