Approximately two kilometres of straight beach south from Shelley Caves lies Buchanan’s Head, or, as most people call it, Plumbago. It’s a grey and beautiful punctuation mark of stone on a long stretch of beach.
Plumbago is directly in front of Lake Arragan. (Lake Arragan is best accessed by an umbilical-type tributary that winds north from Red Cliff camping area)
There’s some little sea caves here at Plumbago. The nearshore ocean gets a bit moody around Plumbago, so swimming is hazardous. Most commonly, Plumbago is accessed by walking 2.5 kilometres north from Red Cliff. If you're up for a bit of a bike ride along the beach, this is the place to do it.
