Rodeo and Horseriding
From thrilling rodeo to trail riding, the beautiful Tamworth region in northern NSW is home to great competitions and horseback adventures, including jillaroo and jackaroo schools. You’ll enjoy major events in one of the finest equine venues in the world, the Australian Equine and Livestock Events Centre.
Check out the compelling events calendar for all the action, including the spectacular Australian Stock Horse Society National Show in March. You’ll be thrilled by amazing cutting-horse skills at the NCHA Tamarang Futurity in May, the richest three-year-old horse performance event in Australia.
A cutting horse is a horse trained to separate cattle from a herd, and skilled riders and nimble horses work together vying for the Futurity prize. The adrenalin-pumpingin November is professional bull riders trying to stay on bucking bulls for eight heat-stopping seconds.
Only 50 minutes’ drive southwest of Tamworth is charming Quirindi and the Quirindi Rodeo. Held in February, it’ll wow the whole family with bronco riding and trick riding and much more. You’ll marvel too at the striking district landscapes, where vast sunflower fields shine from December to March.
A delightful way to see the pretty countryside is on horseback. You’ll find tours for all levels of experience, such as Tamworth Kootingal Horse Riding Adventures in Kootingal, a short drive from Tamworth. Harlow Park Horse Riding is near historic Uralla, just 60 minutes northeast of Tamworth.
For an outback adventure, you can learn the horseriding and cattle-mustering skills of jillaroos and jackaroos - cowgirls and cowboys – on working farms around Kootingal. Choose from either the Leconfield 5 Day Jackaroo and Jillaroo School or the Leconfield 11 Day Jillaroo and Jackaroo School.
