Extending over two major regions, the Cumberland Plain and the Hornsby Plateau, Sydney rises 200 metres above sea level and is dissected by steep valleys. The urban area is 1,800 sq km.

January is the warmest month of the year, with an average temperature of 19–26°C (65–78°F) and up to 30°C (86°F). The coldest month is July, with an average range of 8–17°C (46–61°F).
