The West Wyalong Wetlands is an innovative water collection and conservation area that combines environmental sustainability with a haven for local wildlife.
Developed as part of Bland Shire Council's extensive drainage network, the wetlands collect stormwater runoff from Wyalong and West Wyalong into a large dam and a series of ponds with varying water depths. Designed to help manage the town's drainage during heavy rainfall, the system can hold approximately 60 megalitres of water and serves as an important resource for irrigating local parks, gardens and recreation facilities.
Originally established on a natural bird and wildlife sanctuary, the wetlands have been enhanced through extensive revegetation with indigenous plant species. Covering more than six hectares, the area provides valuable habitat for native birds and wildlife. A central island within one of the ponds offers a protected breeding ground for birds, helping shield them from predators such as foxes.
Visitors can enjoy peaceful walks, birdwatching and nature photography while exploring this unique environmental asset. At the entrance, the Yindyamarra Outdoor Aboriginal Display showcases Aboriginal artefacts and interpretive information, offering insight into the region's rich cultural heritage.
