Graham Lupp: A Closer Look
Overview
A Closer Look encapsulates Graham Lupp's passion for the landscape around Bathurst, where he was born. This has been a lifelong fascination, stemming from his childhood and times spent fishing with his father. In this exhibition, Lupp explores the notion of the Sublime, a concept in which an experience of grandeur, particularly in relation to the natural landscape, evokes awe, wonder and sometimes terror. In the Australian bush he finds the compelling combination of beauty, mystery and melancholy. Lupp's large acrylic paintings, alongside small intimate studies in pastel and gouache, meticulously detail intertwining masses of branches, limbs and trunks. Dark shadows lurk threateningly within, but Lupp suffuses the paintings with glorious late afternoon light, creating a softness that balances the dark.
