Sundown Nature Trail

The Sundown Nature Trail, Broken Hill offers an authentic outback walking experience through the rugged Sundown Hills, just 10 kilometres north of the city. The 2.8-kilometre trail winds across rocky ridges and gullies, rewarding walkers with expansive views across the Barrier landscape and a closer look at the plants, wildlife and ancient geology of the region.

What sets the trail apart is its wonderfully untouched character. Fourteen interpretive points reveal a landscape shaped over an extraordinary geological history, alongside hardy native vegetation adapted to the Far West environment. Kangaroos and euros may be spotted among the gullies, while wedge-tailed eagles, parrots and smaller birds add to the sense of being immersed in the Australian outback. The trail was originally created as a community volunteer project for Broken Hill's Centenary in 1983 and refreshed by local volunteers in 2018.

The trail complements a visit to the nearby Living Desert and Sculptures, where visitors can continue exploring the distinctive landscapes of the Barrier Ranges. The walk takes around 90 minutes and crosses hilly, rocky terrain, so moderate fitness, sturdy footwear and drinking water are recommended. Walkers are encouraged to take only photographs and leave only footprints, helping protect this remarkable landscape for generations to come. Discover another side of Broken Hill on foot.
