The Berrima District Historical and Family History Society was established in 1960 with the aim of encouraging the study of Australian, local, and family history. The Society also sought to create a museum and a permanent archive dedicated to preserving the documentary and material heritage of the Southern Highlands of New South Wales.
Its collections encompass the major towns of Bowral, Mittagong, Moss Vale, Robertson, and Bundanoon, as well as numerous villages throughout the region. These include Avoca, Aylmerton, Balaclava, Braemar, Berrima, Burrawang, Canyonleigh, Colo Vale, Exeter, Glenquarry, Hilltop, Kangaloon, Penrose, Sutton Forest, Tallong, Wildes Meadow, and Wingello.
