Made in Australia at Miss Porter's House

Open Sunday 25th and Monday 26th January, celebrate Australia Day long weekend at Miss Porter's House Museum where visitors can enjoy a heritage Australian home and special displays of Australiana and Australian manufactured items.

Spend the Australia Day long weekend day reliving the early twentieth century and marvel at the many locally manufactured items of yesteryear.

Enjoy the home created by Australian born children of nineteenth century migrants. Newcastle boy Herbert Porter and his wife Florence raised a family in Newcastle West. Their freestanding Edwardian home is now a National Trust museum containing a century of household memorabilia including many which reflect their interest in the local area and all things Australian. Visitors can turn the pages of newly acquired replicas of the museum's picture card books.

They'll discover how their children, Ella and Hazel, collected picture cards from packets of Sanitarium breakfast foods, the Australia and New Zealand of the mid-twentieth century, and how attitudes to people and events have changed.

Children can spot the images of kookaburras, kangaroos and wattle which adorn the Porter women's crochet, embroidery and stencil work. They'll also find native motifs on commercial brooches, matchboxes and tea towels.
