Mathoura Speed Shear
Overview
The Mathoura Speed Shear celebrates its 10th anniversary at the Mathoura Recreation Reserve. This high‑energy shearing competition attracts 80–90 shearers each year, delivering a full day of fast-paced action and community spirit.
Competitors can enter four categories — open, seniors, intermediate and women — plus the crowd‑favourite Trans‑Tasman Challenge, where Aussies take on the Kiwis in a battle of speed and skill.
Speed shearing is simple: the quickest shearer to take a sheep to shed standard wins. A cash prize is awarded to the fastest shearer of the day across all categories.
The event also raises funds for the Mathoura Bra Fence, supporting locals undergoing cancer treatment. Community groups benefit through bar, canteen and gate proceeds, and families can enjoy kids' activities, including kite flying, food and drinks.
A huge crowd is expected again this year, with organisers promising an exciting day in the sheds and plenty of entertainment for all ages.
