Overview
Step back in time and experience the rich heritage and colonial history of the property "Settler's Rest", where the Burton family have lived and worked for six generations.
Their story begins when James Burton (1793) was transported as a convict to Sydney Cove in 1816 aboard the "Atlas III". In 1828, he and his wife, Elizabeth, received a Free Settler's Land Grant at O'Connell Plains, NSW, and raised six children.
In 1856, their eldest son James and his wife Mary purchased the land, which was very close to his parents' original Land Grant property. They built their family home here at "Settler's Rest" and reared ten children.
The Convict's Great-Great-Grandson will give you a guided tour of the "Settler's Rest" slab hut Burton family home and an impressive display of artifacts and historic farm machinery. See what is ready to pick from the vegetable garden or sit quietly for a moment in the memorial garden. After your tour, enjoy morning tea on the verandah.
