Salote Tawale: The Tide Continues
Overview
Australian-Fijian artist Salote Tawale, a lecturer at Sydney College of the Arts, the University of Sydney, presents a new exhibition inspired by the Lake Macquarie region.
Tawale's two-week residency in 2025 focused on researching the region's surrounding waterways and mangroves, and the introduction of colonial interceptions on the surrounding natural landscape.
This research contributed to her long‑standing exploration of what it means to live between two contrasting cultures, a theme that continues to anchor her practice.
Balancing interaction with quiet reflection, the exhibition brings together a video work made by Salote in Hawai'i, gentle floor seating that invites rest, and immersive murals and paintings. While watching and interacting with the space, viewers might wonder where the salty water of Hawaii's vibrant ocean ends and the water of Lake Macquarie begins.
