Step into Stories at Pensioners Hill Lookout.

Once a bustling Depression-era shanty town, Pensioners Hill has had a glow-up, and what a transformation it is! Today, it's a peaceful, art-filled park celebrating Gunnedah's diverse cultural heritage.

Follow the winding, native plant-lined pathway and meet larger-than-life stone sculptures representing the heart of our region: the proud Red Chief, a coal miner, a pioneering woman, and the spirit of agriculture. Guiding you from stone to stone is the mesmerising Rainbow Serpent – a symbol of energy, fertility, and rich Dreamtime stories.

A panoramic view over Gunnedah that's worth every step awaits you at the top.

Don't miss the Aboriginal Scar Trees and Totems – each one telling its own powerful story about local Aboriginal culture, tradition and connection to Country.

Modern additions have made this destination even more welcoming: free electric barbecues, picnic tables, hand-carved benches, bird boxes, an awe-inspiring eagle sculpture, and a nature-based adventure playground for the little explorers.

The gently sloped path is stroller and wheelchair friendly, coach accessible, and free to enjoy!

This special site is a joint project by Gunnedah Rotary West, Gunnedah Landcare Group, and the Red Chief Aboriginal Landcare Council.

Please note: Toilets onsite are only open during events. The nearest public facilities are at Lion's Park, just down the road on the Oxley Highway.
