Fighting Spirit: The Art of Boxing
Overview
Fighting Spirit: The Art of Boxing is a touring exhibition that tells the story of boxing in Australia through art and screen.
`Developed through a creative partnership between curators from the National Film and Sound Archive and the National Portrait Gallery (NPG), this touring exhibition explores through visual art and moving images how the boxing ring has functioned as a stage for public spectacle, community connection and social change from the 1890s to the present day.
Fighting Spirit is built upon the idea that portraiture isn't limited to a static canvas. By showcasing rarely seen footage, paintings and photographs from both national collections, Fighting Spirit employs audiovisual forms as a dynamic type of portraiture. These moving images capture the grit, bravado and resilience of key figures in a different and more immediate way, bringing some of the sport's energy and power into the gallery space.
By traversing themes of identity and courage, the exhibition illuminates boxing's profound influence on Australian society. It highlights the sport as a site of struggle and triumph, particularly reflecting the strength and determination of diverse Australian communities. Supported by the National Collecting Institutions Touring and Outreach Program, this vibrant showcase ensures that these heartfelt stories of endurance are accessible to all Australians.
